Laboratory Equipment Manufacturer for US Buyers: A Guide to Sourcing from Overseas
US labs want kit that is accurate, lasts and comes with good support. When a school, college or lab looks at an overseas laboratory equipment manufacturer, a few extra checks apply. This guide covers what to confirm when you pick a laboratory equipment manufacturer for US buyers based abroad, the equipment groups in the LabExports catalog, and how to request a quote.
When Buying from an Overseas Manufacturer Makes Sense
Buying from abroad tends to suit items you buy in bulk, or items with a simple, clear spec. Think of class sets of teaching kit, glassware, anatomy models, engineering rigs and general bench items. Some systems need a service visit on site. For those, check who will provide that support before you order.
What to Check in a Laboratory Equipment Manufacturer for US Buyers
Power supply and plugs
US mains power is 120 V at 60 Hz, with NEMA plugs. Many other markets use 220 to 240 V at 50 Hz. So state 120 V, 60 Hz in your request. Then check it on the spec sheet for each powered item, from a hot plate to a centrifuge.
Electrical listing
OSHA's electrical rules expect equipment in US workplaces to be approved. In practice, that often means it is listed by a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL). Ask any laboratory equipment manufacturer, us included, what listing each powered item has. Then ask your safety office what your site will accept.
Glass grade
For glass that will be heated, ASTM E438 is the US reference. Its Type I, Class A glass is borosilicate. ISO 3585 covers the same 3.3 grade. For a burette or other measuring glass, ask for the accuracy class too.
Lab safety requirements
The OSHA Laboratory Standard, 29 CFR 1910.1450, applies to employers whose staff work with hazardous chemicals in labs. A fume hood or an autoclave must also fit your building and your safety plan. Your safety officer and the maker's manual are the guide for set-up and use.
Import steps
Imports clear through US Customs and Border Protection. Most buyers use a licensed customs broker. The broker classifies the goods under the Harmonized Tariff Schedule and files the entry for you. As importer of record, you remain responsible for it. Agree the Incoterm, such as FOB or CIF, in the quote. That makes clear who pays for freight and cover. Large orders from India go by sea, and small or urgent ones by air.
Import duties, and any extra tariffs on goods from India, apply at entry. They can change, and they can shift the landed cost a great deal. Ask your broker for the current duty on each HTS code before you compare an overseas quote with a domestic one.
Laboratory Equipment Groups in Our Catalog
These groups are what our catalog lists. Ask us which items we make in-house and which we source, the same question you would put to any bidder.
| Lab type | Typical items |
|---|---|
| Biology | Microscopes, incubators, centrifuges, laminar air flow cabinets, water baths, autoclaves, dissection sets, biological models |
| Chemistry | Hot plates, magnetic stirrers, spectrophotometers, a fume hood, burettes, distillation units, glassware sets |
| Physics | Optical benches, electricity kits, dynamics and mechanics apparatus, micrometers, oscilloscopes, meters |
| General lab | Heating mantles, ovens, analytical balances, filtration units, vacuum pumps, test chambers |
| Medical teaching | Centrifuges, sterilizers, blood bank kit, medical college lab items |
| Environment | pH meters, water test kits, field tools, a weather station |
Many bench items now have a digital display or a data interface. If you need a link to a PC or data logger, say so. Then ask for the interface type on the spec sheet.
How an Overseas Order Usually Runs
- You send a list with quantities and specs.
- The maker sends a quote with a spec sheet for each item.
- You agree the terms, the Incoterm and the delivery point.
- The goods are made or picked, then packed for export.
- They ship with an invoice, a packing list and a bill of lading or air waybill.
- Your broker clears them, and you check each crate on arrival.
Record any damage before you sign for the goods. Keep the spec sheets on file for your asset register.
Who Uses This Equipment
- High schools and community colleges running teaching labs
- Universities, including engineering departments
- Medical and nursing schools
- Food, agriculture and environmental science labs
- Chemistry and life science labs
